Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP)
n Purpose it to provide “privacy of a wire”
n Uses RC4 for encryption
n WEP Key + initialization vector (IV) are fed into a
pseudorandom number generator
n The IV, Encrypted Message, and checksum are sent
in the 802.11 packet
n Checksum is not WEP key dependent
n IV is changed periodically
n Implementation dependant, but best if every packet (problem
is running out)
n Packet-by-packet data encryption
